Dr. Elias Papadopoulos was born and raised in Athens. He graduated with honours from the Medical School of Athens in 1994 and was later specialised in orthopaedics at the 1st Orthopaedic University Clinic of the University of Athens. During that time, he had the opportunity to receive training for 6 months as a Spinal Surgery Specialist at the Mayo Clinic in the USA.
In 2003, he received his specialisation in Orthopaedics and then left for the USA in order to specialise in Spinal and Scoliosis Surgery at the Weill Medical College of the Cornell University, while working at the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Memorial Sloan Kettering of New York until 2005 when he finally returned to Athens.
He is a founding member of the Spine Department at HYGEIA Hospital and an Assistant Professor at the University of Athens, head of the Spine Department.
He works as a volunteer with Dr. Boachie-Adjei, the world's leading orthopaedic surgeon, operating 2-4 weeks a year in Ghana, West Africa. Since 2008, Dr. Elias Papadopoulos has operated on unique spine disorders, rarely encountered in one’s career. In addition to surgeries, his team publishes articles in international journals on techniques for treating disorders, such as early childhood scoliosis, sever kyphosis, etc.
In 2012, he became a Traveling Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society. Together with two other surgeons, also selected from around the world, and accompanied by the emblematic personality of Dr. Michael McMaster, he travelled to spine surgery centers in the US (St. Louis, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas), operating and giving lectures.
Over the course of his academic career, he has published more than 30 articles in highly prestigious medical journals in the US, such as the Spine Journal, the Journal of Spinal Disorders, etc., as well as chapters in English and Greek books. He has presented his papers at major international and Panhellenic conferences.
He has great love for research and continues to work tirelessly on a variety of topics, such as spinal osteotomies in severe deformities, artificial discs, spinal tumors and inflammation, spinal tumour and inflammation, osteoporosis and kyphoplasty, spinal fusion, scoliosis and kyphosis in children and adults, etc.
He is the head of various research programmes that produce publications at international spine conferences. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Scoliosis Research Society's Patient Education Committee while, as a University Professor, he trains young doctors in spine surgery. He is an active member of the North American Spine Society (www.nass.org), the Scoliosis Research Society (www.srs.org) and the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine- FOCOS (www.orthofocos.org), a non-profit organisation providing medical care in Ghana, Africa.
