What is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine, also known as sport and exercise medicine (SEM), is a part of healthcare that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.
Doctors and surgeons working in this field may have specialization in sports medicine but may also be a sub-specialty or second specialisation such as physiatrist or orthopaedic surgery.
Sports medicine can be considered in part an overlap into the branch of orthopaedics and other speciality areas specializing in the treatment of athletes and other physically active individuals. Focus on treatment includes injuries of muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems, but may also treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance, such as asthma and diabetes. Specialists can also advise on future management and prevention of injury.
Specialists in sports medicine focus to treat any medical conditions which sporting and regular exercisers encounter. These can include musculoskeletal injuries, sports cardiology issues, exercise-induced asthma, unexplained underperformance syndrome, screening for cardiac abnormalities, diabetes in sports, overtraining and fatigue, return to play issues after being sick or injured, nutrition, training, conditioning and others.
In professional sports, sport medicine also plays a role in performance medicine, whereby an athletes' physiology is monitored, and aberrations corrected, in order to achieve peak physical performance.
