Cyprus is constantly upgrading on the medical map. A patient who was diagnosed with a mediastinal tumor, was operated by the specialized thoracic surgeons’ team of the American Institute of Minimal Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) part of the Minimal Interventional and Robotic Thoracic Surgery department, using the robotic da Vinci Xi system, the only one existing in Cyprus.
The increased difficulty in the operation of thymus gland resection was accomplished by preparation, release and preservation of the tumor entrapped phrenic nerve. The operation was completed in less than 2 hours and the patient was discharged the following day. With the minimally invasive robotic thoracic surgery, the blood loss was minimal, with no need for transfusion, the postoperative pain was minimal and patient’s reintegration to his work and daily activities is expected in a week.
The successful Robotic Removal of Thymus Gland (Robotic Thymectomy) was performed by the Director of the Department of Minimal Interventional and Robotic Thoracic Surgery of AIMIS, Dr Manolis Georgiannakis and his team, the Cypriot Thoracic Surgeons, Dr Michalis Maimaris (former Director of Thoracic Surgery Clinic of Nicosia General Hospital) and Dr Maria Maimari, with the assistance of the anesthesiologist Dr Periklis Zavridis.
The permanent presence of the thoracic surgeons of AIMIS Department of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Thoracic Surgery in Cyprus, the well-equipped hospital and the highly trained medical and nursing personnel, ensure the highest standards of healthcare provision to the Cypriot patient, similar to those of centers abroad.
